TOP best chocolate with churros in Santiago de Compostela

A good chocolate with churros should be dense and intensely chocolate-flavored, with a hint of milk to ensure it never becomes gelatinous but remains perfect on the palate.

I confess that I am a great lover of chocolate, though not so much of churros. While churros are the perfect companion for the best chocolate, it’s hard for them to be bad.

However, there are many places in Santiago where you should avoid ordering chocolate… most of it tastes like cornstarch or just flour, and some places don’t even have churros or call a sad ColaCao (forgive me, ColaCao) chocolate.

Here are the best places, in my opinion, where you can enjoy chocolate with churros in Santiago de Compostela:

Chocolate con churros en Santiago de Compostela

1. Bar “in ANTRUM” en San Lázaro

Besides being a great spot for morning vermouth or evening drinks, this place serves chocolate at any time of day.

For me, it offers the best chocolate in Santiago de Compostela.

If you are or have been a pilgrim and arrived in Santiago via the iconic Monte do Gozo, you’ve passed by this bar. Does this view look familiar?

The churros are also very good, freshly made, frozen, and cooked in an air fryer, so they come out crispy, hot, and not greasy. Personally, I prefer them over the traditional deep-fried ones.

2. El Galicia “Churrería Galicia & Nino’s Pizza” in the city center

Just a few meters from Plaza Roja is Galicia, a long-standing bar also known for its pizzas, which they serve all day long.

But besides pizzas, they make the best chocolate with churros in central Santiago (since the closure of Metate).

At Galicia, they prepare an excellent chocolate—thick, intensely flavored, and with very good churros.

It’s also cheaper compared to other places.

If you’re looking for a central spot for good chocolate, this is a great option.

3. Restaurante Montoto – Cafetería

Also near Plaza Roja, heading towards Plaza de Vigo on Santiago del Estero Street, you’ll find Restaurante Cafetería Montoto.

This café, which has not been open for long, serves good chocolate with a rich, intense flavor and thick texture, with more than decent churros.

4. Bar Cangaceiro

Located on Rúa Nova de Abaixo, Bar Cangaceiro is a charming bar known for its selection of smoothies, coffees, and teas.

Among the drinks they prepare is a good chocolate with churros. However, they don’t always have churros and the prices are not the best.

5. Chocolatería Metate

The first chocolatier in Santiago and probably one of the first in the whole country.

This place is no longer what it used to be, but decades ago, it imported chocolate beans and prepared the chocolate in a unique way.

It has been closed for a long time, with periods when you didn’t know if it would open or not. I’m unsure if they now adhere to regular hours.

When I was able to go, it was no longer what it used to be—the chocolate was good, but the churros were mediocre, and the prices were high.

Moreover, there’s little space; it used to be two floors with always available seating, but now they only serve upstairs, and there is very little room.

It’s worth a visit, and if they reopen the lower floor, it’s a must-see for the old chocolate-making equipment.

I’m including it in the list because it has to be here for its history and what it once was, and hopefully, will be again someday.

For me, it was the best chocolate in the world.
